Horse & Writer Invitational?

We Have Answers!

Skip Ewing’s Horse & Writer™ Invitational

Q. Where does all of this take place?
A. Horse & Writer Invitational will be held at the Triangle C Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming

Q. Do I have to ride horses or be an experienced horseback rider in order to attend Horse & Writer?
A. Heck no! You don’t need any prior riding experience to attend Horse & Writer Invitational. In fact, if You’d rather not, you don’t have to ride horses at all. If you do want to ride, however, it helps if you know which side is the head and which side is the tail. But other than that, we'll help you out with anything you might need to know. The ranch has excellent wranglers who are used to all types of folks, from those who’ve never been on a horse before, to those who’ve been galloping for years! (There is a weight limitation of 300 pounds for riders.)

Q. Is it true that if I’m accepted i’ll attend on 100% scholarship and won’t have to pay any tuition?
A. Yes! This year, (and we hope every year henceforth) scholarships will be extended to every writer who is selected and attends the Horse & Writer Invitational event. This means that if You are accepted, You will not have to pay the $2500 tuition fee otherwise due. All you’ll have to pay for is your transportation and application fees. Tuition includes your lodging, meals, education, and horseback riding. Please see the Horse & Writer Invitational official rules and application form for more detailed information.

Q. What if I don’t want to horseback ride at all? Will I miss anything important?
A. If You decide You do not wish to ride at all, You won’t miss out on any of the specialized writing instruction, group & individual writing exercises, question & answer sessions, performances, or one-of-a-kind songwriting growth and development opportunities. You do not have to ride to attend any of the Horse & Writer programs.

Q. How much is it to apply to Horse & Writer Invitational?
A. The application fee to apply for Horse & Writer Invitational and receive a written evaluation of your writing based on all of the songs in your application package is $150. Acceptance to the program is dependent upon your application and the rules governing acceptance.

Q. Does every applicant receive a written evaluation or only those writers who are chosen?
A. In an effort to help encourage and improve a writer’s continued and future work, every applicant to Horse & Writer Invitational will receive a written evaluation focusing on his or her writing in total. Our industry professional and pro-songwriter panel assesses the skill, proficiency and aptitude of each writer based on the combined information afforded by ALL of the songs submitted in that writer’s application package, not the songs individually.

Q. Can I just pay to come to Horse & Writer Invitational without applying?
A. If you wish to pay to attend a Horse & Writer program please register for Skip Ewing’s Horse & Writer Classic. You may only attend Horse & Writer Invitational if you apply, and are selected based on the criteria in the official regulations and rules governing acceptance (Please view the Horse & Writer Invitational official rules and application form for more detailed information.)

Q. May I apply more than once?
A. A writer may only apply to Horse & Writer Invitational once a year, and only if that writer was not accepted to the “Invitational” the year previous. Applications may be rejected without the proper submission requirements. Please refer to the Horse & Writer Invitational official rules and application form for complete details on how to submit your application.

Q. What if my co-writer wants to be accepted, too? — Does he or she have to send in their own application, or can we both apply with the same application?
A. Every writer wishing to be accepted to Horse & Writer Invitational must apply separately even if the songs with which they’re applying are the same. Please refer to the official Horse & Writer Invitational rules and application form for complete details on how to submit.

Q. What if don’t live in the United States? — If i live in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Greece, Holland, or any other foreign country, may i still apply?
A. You may apply for Horse & Writer Invitational no matter what country you live in. The above list reflects those countries from which we’ve already accepted applicants or received applications in previous years.

Q. I don’t write or play music. May I apply with just a lyric?
A. In order to apply to Horse & Writer Invitational your songs must have both a melody and a lyric. You do not need to have a full studio demo. A simple guitar/vocal or piano/vocal demonstration recording is fine. You may even apply by singing the melody and lyric without any other accompaniment at all. Similarly, we cannot accept instrumentals or melodies without a lyric. For complete details on how to apply, please see the official rules and application form.

Q. The application rules say I’m not eligible if I have national distribution. — If i sell my own music and have distribution through iTunes, CDBaby, or any of the Indie music distribution sites through my own publishing, may I still apply?
A. Yes, you are still eligible to apply under those circumstances. Although these sites do effectively distribute music nationally/internationally, under that scenario you would still be considered as having independent distribution. If you’re unsure if your distribution or publishing is “national distribution,” in this context, check with us. We are always available to answer questions via email: horseandwriter@skipewing.com

Q. Into what airport should I fly? - How do I get from the airport to the ranch?
A. We suggest flying into Jackson Hole. Although we cannot provide the transportation ourselves, we will be happy to help you contact the right people in order to arrange ground travel and airport transfers. You can also rent a car; though, most of our students find no need for one during the week of the program.

Q. Can I bring my own horse? Can I bring my dog? Can I bring my own saddle?
A. For a number of reasons, including altitude, inoculations, and insurance, the ranch will not allow anyone to bring their own horse or dog. You may bring your own saddle, but all of the riding done at the ranch is western and no other types of saddles will be allowed. The ranch reserves the right to ask you not to ride your own tack if it is not appropriate for your mount.

Q. Are there poisonous snakes or scorpions?
A. Because of the weather and altitude, there are no indigenous poisonous snakes, nor are there any scorpions.

Q. Is there a piano there at the ranch?
A. Yes there is. The lodge has a saloon style stand-up piano. (And it’s always just out of tune enough to sound authentic!)

Q. Didn’t find your answer?
